Chicago is brimming with young new talent, proving that there is much more to our city than meets the eye. Enter Lisa Decibel, a Chicago-born DJ for Young Chicago Authors, a poetry collective encouraging self-expression that literacy through writing and performance art. This young lady is super chill and mad real. She sat down to kick it with me about Louder than a Bomb, Black and Brown youth creativity, growing up in the hundreds, and being complimented by Ali Shaheed from A Tribe Called Quest on her skills. Thug Scholar: How did you get involved with Louder than a Bomb/Young Chicago Authors? Lisa Decibel: I've been going to LTAB events since I was in high school because I've always loved poetry and spoken word. In 2012 my friend Jasmine Barber told me about YCA and I started going to wordplay on Tuesdays and getting acquainted with the older LTAB community. Last year, I was at YCA before Wordplay and one of the directors said that they needed a DJ for the month, so Jasmine suggested me for the gig and the rest is history in progress (haha).
