The other day, I realized I was on the verge of creating the 10th Butch & Quinn podcast. If you don't already know, Butch & Quinn is a series I started to highlight casual conversations involving rap, it's culture and media. Topics range from Bobby Shmurda to race relations to barz and each session features raw, unscripted commentary from Butch (myself) & her bae Quinn (short for Dr. Quinn)

Yesterday, local rapper Pavy released the visuals for "Babylon," track 4 off his R.O.M.E. album which came out in Fall 2014. Alongside director TPJ, Pavy attempts to continue the conversation regarding police brutality and racial profiling; it's even dedicated to Mike Brown & Eric Garner, who have become, in death, poster children for the many men and women of color who've come before (and after) them. The young artist released a statement expressing his thoughts about the video, and even shares how he almost didn't release it at all: "I really did not want to put this video out… Honestly, I've only watched it once. It has brought up things that I really don't enjoy thinking or conversing about, at all. So, “Why do it?" you ask. I felt like it was the right thing to do. If I can voice my opinion on everything else why shouldn't I do it for something that actually matters and affects all of us. This is more than a "black issue." This is an American issue. If I offend anyone, I'm sorry. That truly wasn't my intention. I’m only voicing my opinion on issues we all need to be conscious of and can no longer ignore. I know that is damn near impossible. — I only want all of us to live in peace and harmony… This is a issue that will probably never end because the conversation will probably never be properly had. So… here you go." I guess artists can deliver a message without worrying about a check. And all this time Nicki Minaj had me (and Rolling Stone) going for a minute...
Which brings me to ask this: Do you think it would make a difference if more Black artists spoke out about police brutality or Black issues in general? Let me know with a comment! Follow Me @AllieLyke Hello All! My name is Allie Lyke and I am the newest member of the ATS family. I will be taking the role as Executive Content Producer and I'm very excited to begin my work. To give some background: I'm a writer (first), creative, and rap enthusiast from Washington, D.C. After moving to Chicago in 2011, I graduated from DePaul University with a Master's of Journalism. Since then, I've founded Lyke Media, a start up digital media and public relations firm for local, small businesses, and creative professionals. I've also started a podcast called Butch & Quinn which you can check out on soundcloud. Although my love for writing started at a very young age, it was heightened during my time with gowherehiphop.com. As a blogger and tastemaker, I developed a love for music media and underground rap talent. It is that love that sparked various critiques of rap & hip hop culture on my website, EverythingAllison.com, and now, Against The Stream Magazine! As Executive Content Producer, I feel I have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Not only can I provide an accurate portrayal of the magnificent city of Chicago and its people; I get to do it in a way that brings me joy - blogging. It may sound silly to you, but it's the truth. I gain inner peace knowing that I can keep others (you) informed, current, and involved. In keeping with ATS values, I hope that you'll allow me to uplift, enrich, and inspire you to explore and expand your Chicago community and all the amazing people within it changing the game daily! Because it's a new year, I leave you with the latest from Kanye West & Paul McCartney - Only One. "Hello my only one/just like the morning sun/you'll keep on rising til the sky knows your name/Hello my only one/remember who you are/no you're not perfect but you're not your mistakes"
