I am by all means a foodie who loooooves spicy foods. By spicy I don’t mean hot, I mean full of flavor. I had a wonderfully spicy experience nestled in the Southside on 63rd street. Garifuna Flava encompassed all the Caribbean tastes that I grew to love right in my hometown. Garifuna Flava is a Belizean restaurant that melds together Latin American and Caribbean flavors. You can get everything from this place from patties to tamales, so you know I was in heaven. The environment was warm and welcoming, and the staff was so nice to my mother and I. I give Garifuna’s food five Stream Stars as well.
Me and Mama Daisy had tamales, panades, jerk wings, and garnaches for appetizers. The waiter patiently answered our one thousand questions as we inquired about the newbies, panades and garnaches. The new foods were great. Garnaches are like tostadas with a twist; they put ketchup on top. While I was hesitant, they were great, especially with the panades cabbage sauce. Panades are fish filled corn patties. They were a lot softer than a tamale but around the same concept. The items I knew about jerk wings and tamales were great and even they were unique. The tamale had an entire chicken leg in it. Bone and all. CAN YOU SAY YUM. My mother and I smashed. For our entrée we chose Belizean stew chicken and stew ox-tail. Both orders came with rice and beans, cabbage and plantains. The ox-tails were amazing. It was as if somebody took my grandmama’s ox-tail and slapped some Caribbean sun on it. The chicken was juicy and tender. And by the time we left, I was three pounds heavier and five times happier. OH and don’t let me forget DESSERT! Garifuna’s POUND CAKE WITH CARAMEL. That’s all I’m going to say. If you can’t tell that my mouth is watering up as I write this, I’ll just say it. My mouth is watering up writing this post. Garifuna had a great atmosphere and even better food. It’s no wonder that it has been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Check Please, Hungry Hound, and Chicago’s Best.
