They did it! Jackie Robinson West Little League Baseball has solidified its place in the Little League World Series finals. The team is two games away from being Little League World Series champions. The band of young baseball players from our city have taken Chicago news headlines by storm, rallied their community behind them, and combatted Chicago's notorious reputation with positivity. It seems like a lot of pressure to put on a group of young players spanning ages, but the kids have taken the pressure in stride. In the last few years, all eyes have been on our city. Between the murder rate and rappers like Chief Keef and Young Durk, headlines have seldom been positive. Drill music has cast this cloud that all Chicago youths do is make music and shoot guns. The series has placed a much needed light on the other talents that Chicago kids have. I had hoped that major news outlets would highlight the spirit that the games have created. And though it took far too long, today is the first day that the young, bright faces have graced major newspaper covers. Regardless of whether the major news outlets have used this opportunity to highlight the positive or not, the country is seeing that there is much more to Chicago than drill music, gangs and gun violence. We care about our community.
As my mother and I sat watching the news highlights of the games, my mom said, "We need this." And she she's right. I think we all needed to reminder that our city. Jackie Robinson West has been that and so much more. Walking down Michigan Avenue, I saw that bright yellow shirt and felt pride.
