Terry Adkins' lecture revealed his interest in reversing art into something more than just visions. It also explored how he turns music into physicality similar to that of art. He described his overall goal of art as to "render material immaterial, and his musical goal as to create an "energy" where the body becomes "the material." Adkins' Recital is a collection based on the influences of Adkins' father, grandfather, John Coltrane, Bessie Smith, W.E.B. Dubois, JImi Hendrix, John Brown, Matthew Henson and others. The exhibition is comprised of many pieces, three of which we have gathered for you. Dark Water RecordThis piece is based on W.E.B. Dubois and his influence in China. It plays one of the scholar's speech without sound. The needles make the speech's presence evident. StillThis piece reveals the complexity of Adkins' art. Comprised of a communal cup plate with a flask of whisky atop of it. According to the artist the piece address the "collision of the sacred and the profane. It speaks of rituals focused around alcohol, addressing the discrepancy between communal wine and the whisky, church and the juke joint. ColumbiaAlthough this picture is an installation view including two other pieces, the piece we are focusing on is on the far right of the photograph, entitled Columbia. This piece in the collection was created in memorandum of Bessie Smith. It has 168 coats of paint which represents the number of records that Bessie Smith made for Columbia. Though simple, the large disk represents a large part in American Blues history. It represents the mark and uniqueness of Smith's legacy. photos courtesy of: Tang Teaching Museum
