I get to go to a great concert every year. One of this year's memorable live performances is undoubtedly the show I saw at The Under the Influence of Music Tour. The line up was great, including headliners Jeezy and Wiz Khalifa. Some other performers included DJ Drama, Mack Wilds, Ty Dolla $ign, IAMSU, Spenzo, Lil Durk, and Berner. The audience was wild, to say the least. The venue was packed. And as each artist came, the crowd seemed to be more and more hype. As I listened to Ty Dolla $ign croon, I couldn't help but notice that there was a definite build up for Wiz Khalifa's performance. But as Wiz's set went on, it was clear that the music the audience was there to hear wasn't going to be played. I came with the expectations of a Wiz Khalifa that is no longer in existence. I was craving the Kush and Orange Juice, Rolling Papers tunes; but what I heard was a bevy of poorly mimicked drill songs that will be on the Blacc Hollywood album. Though Wiz Khalifa's performance wasn't the highlight of the show, Jeezy showed up and showed out. The acoustic versions of his songs had the audiences hands up in the air. I have seen Jeezy perform three times now. But his performance was by far the best. He was engaging and he played all of his hits. Jeezy even rocked his signature snowman tee from his start in Hip Hop. Wiz on the other hand has definitely changed is style. The artist rocked a bullet proof vest and spoke of AK-47's. Listening to this new turn in his musical flow was a bit disappointing. The platform that gave Taylor Gang a stage doesn't really mesh with Khalifa's attempt at drill music. As a Chicagoans, I think the audience found it hard to get into this version of Wiz Khalifa's music. As he debuted songs on the album, some of the audience began to filter out. There is such a huge collection of drill artist with the authority to speak about guns and violence. Wiz Khalifa, even with an alleged warrant, isn't one of them. Seeing as Chicago is the home of drill music, I think that Wiz should have focused much of his set on the songs that made us fall in love with him in the first place. This alter ego, is a little wack in my ears. -MK Check out pics from the show below! Comment, like and share!
