“Was that an Illuminati meeting?” Co-Boss Lady, Allie, joked as we discussed Tidal. I laughed heartily. Though I don’t believe in the Illuminati, I do believe in elitism. And the display shown in the Tidal press release was all about elitism. It was the most successful artists in the industry saying to all of us that they were going to do what was in their best interest. #TidalforAll is really just #TidalforAllMyMoney. I see Tidal just being yet another reason why it’s hard to break into the industry. And though I was geared to go in, I was relieved that one passionate tweeter did the dissenting for me. Miss Petty Wap, or shall I say The Empowered Fat Bitch, called out Tidal for all its crap. Check out the article after the jump! And read what I think Spotify should do now. “Last night Jay Z and friends took to the internet with the hashtag #TidalforAll, sparking interest for the launch of his Streaming service. A few minutes ago in the anticipated press conference, Jay Z launched his new platform, “Tidal”, a streaming service owned by artists, I suppose also “For them?” A musical brand of “Fubu”, if you will. This move was expected, as it was reported in 2014 that Jay purchased the streaming service for $56 million. While my girl did her thang with calling Jay-Z and elitism out, I got to thinking. What opportunity does Spotify have to spin this? And, like a bus, a solution smacked me. Spotify now has a great chance to give independent artists who aren’t going to have the money to get on Tidal to put their music on a professional platform (cause if they charging us $20, you can only imagine what they charge artist.). With all the artist with any kind of interest in having a big name feature soon heading to Tidal, Spotify will have to reimagine its brand. And I’m sure that the indie artist will be its answer.
Let’s face it, the platforms that indie artists use are far too broad and don’t really look that great. If Spotify decreases its royalty standards and maintains its aesthetic, it will have a niche for artist who care enough to invest in themselves but don’t have the bread to go Tidal. Good luck Spotify! May the force be with you.
