I'm sure you've heard that Best Man Holiday is a great movie. Here's why I give it 5 Strog Stars.Everyone seems to be raving about Best Man Holiday, and rightly so! The movie was an amazing experience. The movie is a sequel to The Best Man, which delves further into each of the lives introduced in the first move. I bawled and guffawed and at the end something dawned on me. The reason why the film brought out so many emotions in me is because it finally got it right. The message was right, the cast was right, and the depictions were right.
So many films depicting Black life tend to make me angry. They falter because they are too caricatured or because they are pessimistic. Oftentimes, films about black life persist the issues in African American culture. However Best Man Holiday reflects successful African Americans while being honest and realistic about their outcomes. The film, directed by Malcolm D. Lee, shed a refreshing light on issues such as cancer, motherhood, and friendship. While Mia's death (yes, I spoiled it) was heart wrenching it was a fitting turn of events in the movie. The film was realistic because it reflected the resiliency that is Black life. It was not about some amazing climb to a happy ending. In fact the ending just may have been the saddest part of the entire film. The way that each of the characters triumph, over their marital, financial, and emotional struggles, spoke volumes to me because it reflected the Black Life which exists all around me. None of the characters had to be weakened by the reality of their problems. Instead they were lifted up by their friends. I can't speak for other cultures (I only know my experience); but Black folks, we,stick together. That's what I saw in Best Man Holiday. Its depictions of resilience and love are why it gets all five of the Strog Stars I got to give! If you haven't seen it, get your life! And don't worry, even a spoiler can't ruin this great movie!
