Before I begin, welcome again to the newest addition to ATS Magazine. Since Being Mary Jane has a lot of relationship dish in it, I figured it would be an awesome way to give our new section (which is about relationships) a splash. Although there will be posts outside of the BMJ weekly recap, you can read my perspective of the latest of the show here every Wednesday. *Caution* I want to apologize in advance. This post contains expletives
But regardless of her success in life, she is still missing love. The show chronicles her life and the men in her bed. In the 2 hour introductory special, we met MJ's boo, Andre. He just so happens to be married. (Right, where have you heard that one before?) Mary Jane finds out, stumbles upon his wife, and tells her of the affair. Well, in the first episode, Omari Hardwick's rock solid fine ass traipse back in her life. (He was escorted out in the special with a water hose! =]) Along with his return, his wife visits Mary Jane at her office. Viewers watch MJ struggle in the workplace and blah, blah, blah! We are left with the scene of Gabby Union's butt while she sexes up the married man in the shower...of their GYM! The Ridiculously Flawed Big PicturePhoto Courtesy of: BET When in the blue blazens is a rich black woman gonna screw her own man? Or hell, at least not a man that's MARRIED!! I admire Mara Brock Akil so much! She is a beautiful, talented, and successful, MARRIED woman. Her work in Girlfirends was biting, real, and treasured. I have no clue where this one's going. I don't see an angle for Mary Jane, if she is a mistress, outside of being the emotional, less-powerful version of Olivia Pope. One of my followers (@larrycurlyanfro) tweeted me and said, " Scandal's already filling the "my life's full of crazy/extreme drama & only my degree loves me" show quota. bmj is pushing it lol" And I could not agree more.
While I'll spare you the rant I went on in response to Scandal, I will say this. This can't be it y'all. What are our aspiring black female success stories supposed to feel watching these shows. That Being Mary Jane is juicy? Are we supposed to respect her? Because I don't. Mama Daisy has a saying: Ain't no dick that good. TV shows make it seem like these women who have made enough good decisions to get to their successful jobs can't make one choice to leave some dick alone. It's crazy to me. Ladies we can't control what happens to us! But we have control over every moment after. I say that to myself all the time. When Mary Jane was hosing down Andre screaming for him to get off her property, she was my homie. I don't know if I can rock with the chick getting busy in the shower. It's not about morals or pride or even love, its about smarts. When is a successful female role going to actually have some? I mean, let's be real, its only a matter of time before who Mary Jane is sucking becomes more important than her job to viewers. Look at Olivia? What does she do again? I don't think she saved anyone in a while lol. I think that screenwriters should wise up and give a wealthy woman some penis without the side of marriage. When are these hoes gone stop?
